2nd Quarter Winners

SPOT NEWS
1st: Sam O'Keefe Greenwood Journal
Very gripping moment. Too bad about the white shirt.

2nd: Sefton Ipock Anderson Independent Mail
Well framed. Puts the man involved in wreck all alone in a very crowded (and probably noisy) environment. Could use a small crop from the right and top of frame to bring you in to the man faster.

3rd: Sam O'Keefe Greenwood Journal
Well composed, good color palette. No moment, but still an eery photo with good context.

 GENERAL NEWS

1st: Grace Beham Charleston Post and Courier
Photo speaks to the timeless nature of the American Civil War. The photo seems to work better without a face, leading the reader to think about the thousands who died and thousands who were left placing flags at gravesides for years to come.

2nd: Heidi Heilbrunn Greenville News
Good use of a wide angle lens, with a decent color palette. Takes readers where they normally don't go.

3rd: Grace Beham Charleston Post and Courier
Fairly standard photo for a funeral, but photographer did a good job of capturing an intimate moment from afar.

FEATURE

Good job finding a different angle on a homeless story. Good use of light

2nd: Sam O'Keefe Greenwood Journal
Great use of composition, layering and light.

1st: Sam O'Keefe Greenwood Journal
Very well layered and composed. A different look at golf.

2nd: Sefton Ipock Anderson Independent Mail
Great peak action. Well cropped. A D3 would have come in handy.

3rd: Gerry Melendez The State
Photographer saw the light well.

PORTRAIT

1st: Gerry Melendez The State
Well lit portrait that conveys a striking, somewhat somber and dark mood. The details really stick out against the dark.

2nd: Sam O'Keefe
Another well lit portrait with a nice face.

3rd: Nathan Gray Anderson Independent Mail
A bit of a surprise with composition. Kudos for photographer for seeing this. Still lacks a punch, though.

MULTIPLE

This is one of those stories where the events surrounding the event are more interesting than the event itself. Good job by the photographer to look around and see what was happening. Curious about the decision to go black and white over color. Too much red, white and blue? A few good moments in here with some good framing and use of available light.

2nd: Gerry Melendez The State
A classic College World Series picture story with a pretty good narrative. Good peak action, use of light, sense of place, moments. Overall the story could use some cropping (or was shot too loose). This is the case with the ending photo of the pile. There are not enough streamers to make this photo read well that loose.

3rd: Ken Ruinard Anderson Independent Mail
This is a sad and heartwarming story. But I never really get to know the dog. Many of the photos are shot at a similar focal length and from the same subject to camera distance. The photos are all shot from the perspective of the photographer, not the dog. The body language of the dog without the cart is enough to break your heart. This story could have been so much richer and about the relationship between man and best friend. Instead it feels more like a process story.
